A trio of Okanagan-based sommeliers are turning their desire for better non-alcoholic beverage options into a business success story, thanks in part to support from Community Futures North Okanagan.

Inspired by the sober journeys of friends and family, yet dismayed at the lack of quality choices, Bobby Faurot, John Glenn and Alex Viol began a journey of their own as they looked to seek out and showcase the best non-alcoholic options in the market.

The result is Somm Zero, which offers a carefully curated selection of wines, spirits and beers from around the world.

Somm Zero initially approached three major financial institutions for financial assistance needed to start the business, but those institutions were unable to provide support. However, friends suggested that the trio could reach out to Community Futures as a potential lender for their local startup.

The decision to work with Community Futures to get off the ground paid off in a big way: Somm Zero is currently on track to double or possibly triple its revenue year-over-year from 2024 to 2025.

Today, Somm Zero's online store offers a collection of high-quality wine, beer and spirits, all of which are alcohol-free but deliver on taste and experience.

As the business continues to expand across the country, Somm Zero now supplies non-alcoholic products to businesses in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and B.C. The company also continues to ship directly to consumers in many more locations nationwide.

Community Futures North Okanagan offers flexible loans and business advice. The business loans are unique in that they can cover most expenses, including startup capital, seasonal needs or expansion, to help new businesses succeed.
