Dozens of taekwondo students will converge at a Penticton mall later this week and raise funds for the South Okanagan Women In Need Society (SOWINS).
Adam Foster, owner of Valley Taekwondo in Penticton, is bringing his annual "Break-a-Thon" event to Cherry Lane Shopping Centre on Friday (May 30).
It will mark the third time Foster is hosting the event in Penticton after he organized a similar function in Spruce Grove, Alta. for more than 20 years.
Students from the school will break sponsored boards, at $100 a piece, with all of the proceeds set to go toward SOWINS.
"Our focus is on building character Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥” promoting healthfulness, kindness, and empathy through disciplined training and positive community involvement," Foster said engaging his school's students with the event.
Over the last two years, the event has raised around $7,500 for SOWINS.
Foster says he's looking forward to welcoming local businesses and community members to rally in support of the non-profit organization, which has served women, children, youth, and families facing abuse and violence across the region since 1981.
"Hopefully, we can raise $5,000 this year, slowly build up that total, and slowly make an impact in our community," Foster added.
This Friday's event, beginning at 4:30 p.m., will feature an opening ceremony before around 30 local students from Foster's school take part in the "Break-aThon."
"If anyone wants to come in and do some spontaneous donations, that would be great because 100 per cent of the money goes to SOWINS," Foster said.
