If you香蕉视频直播檝e ever driven through the intersection at Old Okanagan Highway and Butt Road, you know it can be a bit of a mess.
It香蕉视频直播檚 the only traffic-light-controlled intersection in West Kelowna that the city fully manages香蕉视频直播攁nd it's also where the most costly collisions happen according to a staff report.
City council will hear on May 13 about a major upgrade to the intersection aimed at making it safer and more efficient. The plan includes new left-turn lanes in every direction, a right-turn lane heading west on Butt Road, a proper sidewalk to replace the current uneven asphalt path, and dedicated bike lanes.
The project will also replace old water pipes and improve drainage on the southwest corner, where high water from Westbank Creek has caused damage in the past.
The construction contract is expected to go to BC General Contracting (BCGC), which submitted the only bid. Their price came in just over $3.2 million, slightly higher than the $2.9 million budget. However, a staff report states that leftover funds from a project on Horizon Drive, and some design tweaks, the budget gap can be covered without cutting any major features.
The city shares ownership and responsibility for the intersection with Westbank First Nation, and the Ministry of Transportation. The ministry is kicking in $600,000 of the $4.35 million cost.
Construction could start as early as the end of May and is expected to finish in fall 2025. There will be disruptions. At least one full closure of the intersection, lasting several weeks, is planned so workers can replace underground utilities. During that time, traffic will be detoured to Elliot Road via Reece and Bering roads within the city, and Bering Rd, Louie Drive and Old Okanagan Highway within Westbank First Nation.
