Police are investigating a pair of West Kelowna wildfires that are believed to be related to one another, which may have been caused by fireworks.
West Kelowna RCMP received a report of a wildfire near Smith Creek Road and Dixie Road around 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13. A second wildfire was reported around 3 p.m., about 500 metres away.
West Kelowna Fire Rescue and BC Wildfire Service responded with ground crews and aerial support, including helicopters.
"Due to close proximity, the second wildfire is believed to be related to the first one," RCMP said in a press release Thursday.
RCMP and the Ministry of Forests Compliance and Enforcement Branch are currently investigating the origin of the wildfire, which police say may be linked to the use of fireworks. Around 10:45 p.m. the previous evening, people driving a UTV were reportedly observed discharging fireworks in the area. Police say the UTV has since been located and the investigation is ongoing.
The wildfires have been contained with no reported injuries or evacuations.
