Violent crime in Revelstoke hit a 27-year high in 2024, Canada's recently-published RCMP data reveals.

Last year, the city's crime severity index notched a 12-year high of 81 per cent, according to the latest Statistics Canada figures.

But the most striking number may be that, after decades of ebbs and flows in Revelstoke's violent crime severity index, 2024 marked a high of 87.5 per cent since 1998, which is the earliest year of records. This also represents a 35 per cent increase in violent crime severity from 2023.

On the bright side, non-violent crime in the city has calmed throughout the 2010s and 2020s, compared with the late 1990s and early 2000s. That said, the severity index for 2024 was 79 per cent, which together with 2023, represents the two highest years for non-violent crime since 2012.

In the City of Revelstoke, the RCMP recorded 675 incidents for 2024, according to separate Statistics Canada data Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥” nearly 100 more incidents than the previous four years, and a 16 per cent jump from 2023.

Seventy-seven adults and two youth faced charges, which are unremarkable numbers compared with earlier years. For example, Revelstoke experienced a high of 95 people charged in 2020, and four youth charged in 2022.

Still, this latest data shows close to one in 100 people in Revelstoke were charged for a crime last year. As well, 2024 saw a spike of 295 people cleared of charges Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥” dozens more than the previous four years.

Additionally, rural Revelstoke saw a five-year high of 112 incidents in 2024, with 16 adults charged and 31 people cleared.
