All five players charged in the Hockey Canada sexual assault trial have been found not guilty, according to numerous media reports of the judgment that was read in an Ontario courtroom on Thursday, July 24.
Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Alex Formenton, Dillon Dub茅 and Callan Foote were charged with sexual assault for an alleged incident that took place in a London, Ont. hotel room on June 19, 2018.
All five played on Canada香蕉视频直播檚 national junior team at the time and later went on to play in the NHL. Four of them were still in the NHL when charges were laid, but went on indefinite leave. The fifth, Formenton, was playing for a Swiss team at the time, and also went on leave.
The trial lasted eight weeks, and the decision from Justice Maria Carroccia raised questions about inconsistencies in the victim's testimony, who is referred to as E.M. in court documents to protect her identity.
The judgment could have an impact on how consent is defined in future cases.
London Police Chief Thai Truong released a statement following the verdict, saying he is determined to continue policing with a "victim-centred, trauma-informed" approach.
"I commend the outstanding courage and strength shown by E.M. in coming forward and enduring this prolonged and difficult judicial process," Truong said. "We remain committed to ensuring that survivors of sexual violence feel supported and safe when interacting with the London Police Service, recognizing the distinct impact trauma can have."
Truong added that the case has raised important conversations about sexual violence nationally and internationally, and systemic issues within institutions, including sport.
Truong also said that trust in police services is fundamental, but he must be mindful of making additional comments because the case could be subject to a possible appeal.
