B.C.'s crown corporation for housing is looking to break dirt next spring on its biggest affordable home development in Revelstoke yet, which would double the city's lower-cost rental stock.

With the provincial government's 2018 purchase of 420 Downie St. in the Southside neighbourhood, BC Housing plans to construct 164 units for families, seniors and young people with moderate incomes.

The plot of land sits on a former lot of Mount Begbie Elementary School, a block over from the popular Southside Market. BC Housing told Black Press Media construction is expected to begin in spring 2026 once it secures a building permit. The site will be operated by the Revelstoke Community Housing Society.

"We are focused on lowering costs for families and ensuring that people are able to find homes they can afford in places they love, just like Revelstoke," BC Housing said by email. "BC Housing will continue to engage with the community as we move closer to construction start."

So far, BC Housing has hosted three public engagements on the project's concept plan, with 150 attendees in 2020. It has also submitted a rezoning and Official Community Plan amendment to Revelstoke's advisory planning commission in 2021, and received unanimous approval from the city on its 2024 development permit application, following a public hearing and various other approvals from council.

According to BC Housing's Homes for BC Map, this latest development will raise Revelstoke's affordable rental inventory to from about 140 to 307 affordable units, all of which have been financed through the crown corporation's Community Housing Fund.

Those already completed include 73 units at 1949 Laforme Blvd. in Columbia Park and 44 units at 1211 Front St. closer to downtown, all operated by BC Housing, and 24 units at 297 Humbert St. in Southside, operated by the Revelstoke Community Housing Society.

"WeÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™re starting to see progress, as asking rents are stabilizing Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥” and even lowering in some communities like Vancouver Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥” while vacancy rates are increasing in some communities," BC Housing added. "But we know there is much more work to do and weÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™re not slowing down."

Future updates on the 420 Downie St. project will be posted by BC Housing at .
