Migrant workers in the Okanagan are the subject of an event in Coldstream June 20.

The Okanagan is the workplace of many migrant workers, mostly hidden from societal view.

There are approximately 16,000 farmworkers that come to B.C. each year to work in orchards and farms.

To better understand the situation these hardworking individuals face, an information session is taking place June 20 in Coldstream.

Amnesty International Okanagan Group and RAMA (Radical Action with Migrants in Agriculture) are hosting the event at the Heidi Thompson Art Gallery (9905 Coldstream Creek Rd) Friday. Doors open at 5:30, the event starts at 6 p.m.

"The event is to invite people in the area to learn about our migrant farmworkers that come and work on our orchards. They play a vital role, however, also face challenges when they arrive," said Tosha Mallette, volunteer and Amnesty member. "There are ways we can support them to make their experience more positive."

Two organizers from RAMA, Amy Cohen and Robyn Bunn, will explain the migrant worker program and the challenges that migrant workers face.

A migrant farmworker from Mexico will also be sharing their experience in the Okanagan.

RAMA Okanagan is a volunteer-run, grassroots collective based in the Okanagan Valley on the unceded territories of the Syilx and Secwepemc peoples.

Founded in 2013, RAMA advocates for the rights and well-being of migrant farmworkers in the Okanagan.

Their work includes political advocacy, direct support, public education, and documenting workers' experiences.

RAMA collaborates with Indigenous movements and other organizations to address systemic issues such as racism, colonialism, and capitalism, aiming to build inclusive and socially just communities.

The event is by donation and has limited space therefore registration is requested online at .
