The municipality of Summerland is applying for funding for wildfire prevention, mitigation efforts and firefighter training.

At the Summerland council meeting on May 27, council approved the application for a $600,000 grant through the Union of B.C. Municipalities Community Resiliency Investment Program.

The municipality will also provide overall grant management for the 2025 FireSmart Community Funding and Support.

The fire mitigation will be done on municipally-owned lands near Summerland香蕉视频直播檚 northwestern boundary, to reduce wildfire risks.

The work will have support from the Ministry of Forests and Penticton Indian Band.

The grant will also secure a contract FireSmart Coordinator position to continue local initiatives.

The Community Resiliency Investment program has been in place since 2018 and was created to reduce the risk of wildfires and reduce the impacts of wildfires on communities in the province.

If the grant funding is approved, there are no financial implications for the community, as the project would be completely funded by the grant.
