Scorching temperatures in Penticton on Wednesday (July 30) produced a new daily heat record.
The city reached a high of 36.8 C, breaking its previous heat record for the day set in 1930 (36.7 C), according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). Records in the area have been tracked since 1907.
Penticton was one of five B.C. communities to break a daily heat record for July 30, joining Dawson Creek, Mackenzie, Prince George and Quesnel.
A heat warning issued by ECCC earlier this week remains in effect for the South Okanagan on Thursday, July 31.
Temperatures could hit between 35 C and 38 C across the region, with overnight lows near 18 C, according to the federal weather department.
There is also a 40 per cent chance of showers and a risk of thunderstorm on Thursday in Penticton.
ECCC says a chance of showers remains in the forecast for Friday and Saturday, the first two days of August.
