Despite fleeing from police, a woman was arrested in Chase after returning to the scene of the crime following an earlier hit-and-run.
At 6:48 p.m. on June 7, the RCMP received a report that a vehicle had hit a pedestrian and fled the scene, where responding officers found the Chase Fire Department administering first aid to the victim, who was conscious and breathing.
Witnesses reported that two men had been drinking at the beach and later accepted a ride from an unknown woman in a red minivan. The woman, described as in her 40s with short brown hair, drove the men and their bicycles to a location on Haldane Street. There, while the men were unloading their bikes, the van reversed and hit one of them.
"While still on scene, police observed a red minivan with visible damage drive past and stop at a nearby rail crossing," Const. Sarah Van Wilgenburg said in a media release, adding police told the driver to pull over. "Once the train passed, the driver fled the area... narrowly avoiding colliding with another vehicle.
"Due to public safety concerns, no pursuit was initiated."
The minivan was later found abandoned by community members who were aware of the incident, with the female suspect subsequently located and arrested.
Chase RCMP continue to investigate and are seeking additional witnesses to the collision or events leading up to it, and ask anyone with information to contact the detachment at 250-679-3221 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
