A new single, released by Tiller香蕉视频直播檚 Folly, tells part of the story of the role of women in the Okanagan fruit industry.
The Apple Box Belles details the role women played in fruit growing, especially during the First World War, when men were called to fight in Europe.
Vancouver-based Tiller香蕉视频直播檚 Folly says women took on many agricultural roles, especially sorting, wrapping and packing apples. They became so efficient at these tasks that contests were created around the job.
In 1937, a worldwide apple competition was held in Birmingham, U.K. and Isobel Stillingfleet of Kelowa was chosen to attend.
At that contest, she was named Apple Queen of the British Empire.
The song release will be accompanied by what Tiller香蕉视频直播檚 Folly calls a songumentary, with virtual walk-throughs and archival images.
The song will be presented at concerts in the Southern Interior of B.C., at The Grist Mill at Keremeos on Aug., 22 at 7 p.m., at the Lantern Folk Roots afternoon outdoor concert, 3002 Dunster Rd. Kelowna on Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. and at the Christina Lake Welcome and Arts Centre, 1975 Hwy. 3, Christina Lake on Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
The band has also told other B.C. stories in the past, including a story of the early days of Barkerville, in the Cariboo.
Tiller香蕉视频直播檚 Folly features Bruce Coiughlan on lead vocals, guitar and whistle, Nolan Murray on fiddle and mandola, Laurence Knight on bass, Chris Nordquist on drums and Gord Maxwell and Loralee Parker on vocals.
