The Okanagan College Coyotes are kings of Western Canadian baseball once again.
On Sunday, May 18, the team secured their third Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC) championship, beating the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 10-9.
OC dominated the first half of the game as they found themselves up 8-1 through six innings. TRU made four errors in that stretch, leading to some of OC's runs.
In the top of the seventh, the WolfPack stormed back with a six-run inning to make it a one-run game.
It remained 8-7 until the bottom of the eighth when right fielder Ethan Skiffington's two-RBI single made it 10-7.
TRU made it a close again, scoring two runs in the top of the ninth. They had the game-tying run on third base but Coyotes' Cory Lawson was able to get the final out to win OC's third championship, and second in four years by the score of 10-9.
Dawson Head earned the win in the championship game while Coleman Kawaguchi and Rico Domingo each collected three hits, with Domingo driving in three runs.
Heading into championship Sunday, the Coyotes were 4-0 in the double elimination tournament, meaning the WolfPack had to beat them twice on Sunday to win the championship.
OC opened the tournament on Thursday by beating Edmonton Collegiate 15-5, followed by a 5-2 win over Vancouver Island University on Friday. On Saturday, they beat the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs 7-6 win punch their ticket to the finals.
At the tournament, the league held their annual regular season awards, where Kawaguchi was named a first-team all-star while Domingo, second baseman Easton Brons and pitchers Teagen Ribbink and Drayson Vodarek were all named second-team all-stars. Kawaguchi set a league record with 25 stolen bases in 31 games played.
Sunday's championship win also marked the final games of their CCBC career for seniors Lawson, Ribbink, Skiffington, and outfielder Adrian Orioli.
