Okanagan players to star at home in Western Canada football challenge

The Kelowna Apple Bowl is the scene for the four-province U17 Western Challenge, with games July 7 and 10; three players from Vernon, three from Kelowna on B.C. roster

Okanagan rivals become teammates next week in Kelowna.

The U17 Western Challenge football tournament will be played over two days at the Apple Bowl.

Team B.C. joins squads from Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba for the event.

"The other teams are big, but what we lack in size, we certainly make up for it in speed," said Team B.C. head coach Rob Ellis of Salmon Arm, former head coach of Armstrong's Pleasant Valley Hawks.

Six Okanagan players are part of Team B.C., including three from Vernon: running back Caden O'Dwyer of the Fulton Maroons, and defensive back Nash Steele and linebacker Owen West from the Vernon Panthers' program. 

They're joined on the provincial roster by Kelowna's Chayse Schlachter, wide receiver from the Okanagan Mission Huskies, wide receiver Steele Law of the Rutland Thunder, and defensive lineman Avery Robertson of the Kelowna Owls.

B.C. will take on Saskatchewan at 1 p.m. Monday, July 7, with Alberta meeting Manitoba at 10 a.m. Monday. The two winners and two losers will play Thursday, July 10 with games slated for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. 

The 2025 U17 Western Challenge is organized and hosted by Football B.C. Tickets for the games will be available at the gate. The games will also be streamed at no charge on your own YouTube channel through .

Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµÖ±²¥¢ Two Vernon players cracked the roster for Team B.C. that will compete in the Maritimes at the 2025 U18 Football Canada Cup in Antigonish, NS, July 12-20.

Ayden McDonald from the VSS Panthers, and Noah McIntyre from the Fulton Maroons, are on Team B.C.

This national competition will feature eight Under-18 (U18) teams representing British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia battling for the national championship.

The defending champions are Team Ontario, who claimed a dominant 45-7 victory over Québec in last yearÏã½¶ÊÓÆµÖ±²¥™s final.
