South Okanagan students excel in track and field events

New records set at Okanagan Valley High School Championships

Students from Summerland and Penticton set records at the Okanagan Valley High School Championships in Kelowna.

The event was held on May 20, and featured athletes from around the region.

Peter Kunka, a Grade 12 student from Summerland Secondary School, set records in the 1,500-metre and 3,000-metre events, with times of 4:01.90 and 8:43.18, respectively.

The previous record for the 1,500-metre event had been set in 1986 by Dan Bertoia, who later went on to represent Canada at the Pan Am Games where he won a bronze medal in that category.

Tyler Hvidston of Penticton Secondary School also set two records, winning the junior boys 300 metre hurdles. His time of 41.19 topped the previous record, set by his teammate Devan Kozak in 2024.

Hvidston also broke his own junior pole vault record with a height of 4.05 metres. He also had a third personal victory in the junior boys 100-metre hurdles and won gold in the junior boys 4x100 metre relay, along with Ryder Young, Wyatt Bonnet Gutsche and Leroy Safford.

Kozak won the senior boys 110-metre hurdles and the 400-metre hurdles this year.

Maverik Rahkola of Penticton Secondary School narrowly missed the record in the senior boys 800-metre event. His winning time of 1:57.70 was one-tenth of a second off the record of 1:57.60.

He also took a second-place finish in the senior boys 1,500 metre and won gold in the senior 4x400 metre relay, with Kozak, Miles Hayden and Alexander Schilter.

Hayden finished second in the 800-metre event and third in the 1,500-metre event.

Alexis Duncan, a Grade 11 student at Penticton Secondary School, won the senior girls 400 metre hurdles with a time of 1:15.22.

Duncan also had victories in other events at the meet.

In the 4x100 metre relay, Duncan, Anna Hatch, Amey Thompson and Baylee Leduc finished first. Leduc also placed second in the 100-metre event and fourth in the 200-metre event.

In the 4x400 metre relay, Duncan, Hatch, Leah Evans and Jordis Hickie placed first.

Evans also placed first in the junior steeplechase and third in the 800-metre and 1,500-metre events. 

Hickie finished second in the senior 1,500-metre event and fourth in the 3,000-metre event.

Thompson finished second in the 100-metre hurdles, third in long jump and fourth in high jump.

Sophia Carleton-Palanio led the junior girls' 4x400 metre relay team of Jessica Wilkie, Ella Walker, and Presley Hickey to victory. She also finished second in the 80-metre hurdles and fourth in the 300-metre hurdles.

Ian Robinson. a Grade 11 student at Summerland Secondary School, finished second in the senior boys' high jump and third in long jump.

Miles Illingworth of Princess Margaret Secondary School won gold in senior boys javelin with a throw of 42.50 metres.

Among Grade 8 students, Ruby Haubner of Penticton Secondary School finished first in the 80-metre hurdles and fourth in the 200-metre event.

Yvonne Hayden of Holy Cross School in Penticton was also a Grade 8 winner in the 1,500-metre event and finished third in the 3,000-metre event.

Her teammate Gabriel Cardoso finished second in Grade 8 boys high jump and third in long jump.

Leroy Safford of Penticton Secondary School finished second in the 1,500-metre and third in the 800-metre events.

The top four junior and senior athletes will qualify for the B.C. High School Championships in Langley, June 5 to 7.

The top 24 Grade 8 athletes in the province will also advance to the B.C. Championships.
