Vernon Paralympian Sonja Gaudet sweeps into new BC Curling Hall of Fame

Curl BC has announced the creation of the BC Curling Hall of Fame to honour the people who香蕉视频直播檝e helped shape the sport香蕉视频直播檚 heritage and culture across the province. 

Leading the inaugural group of inductees are Sonja Gaudet of Vernon and Bernie Sparkes of Chilliwack. Both are already members of the World Curling Hall of Fame, Canadian Curling Hall of Fame, and BC Sports Hall of Fame.

Gaudet is one of the most accomplished wheelchair curlers in the world. A three-time Paralympic gold medallist (2006, 2010, 2014), she also won three world championships and served as Canada香蕉视频直播檚 flag bearer at the 2014 Sochi Games. In 2020, she was inducted into Canada香蕉视频直播檚 Sports Hall of Fame and awarded the Order of Sport. She has also appeared on a Canada Post stamp.

Sparkes made his name in Alberta before moving to BC in 1970. He won three World Curling Championships in the 1960s and represented both Alberta and British Columbia at the Brier, collecting a total of 12 appearances, including nine provincial titles for BC, a Masters Championship, and a mixed title. He was inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame in 1974, the BC Sports Hall in 1995, and the World Curling Hall in 2021.

The BC Curling Hall of Fame will be established on June 7, in conjunction with the Curl BC Annual General Meeting at the Kelowna Curling Club. The first group will feature 64 curlers, builders, and pioneers all previously recognized by at least one of the major curling or sports halls.

While there香蕉视频直播檚 no physical location yet, Curl BC is working on a virtual hall of fame and plans to partner with member clubs across the province to serve as local satellite showcases. Clubs can apply to be part of this network through Curl BC.

Going forward, up to seven new inductees will be selected each year. More details on criteria and nomination deadlines will be announced at curlbc.ca, with March 31 expected to be the annual cutoff for future nominations starting in 2026.
