It's neat, in a way, to think perhaps a Vernon woman was the inspiration behind what would become a multi-million-dollar advertising campaign.
The history picture this week from the Museum and Archives of Vernon, is that of one Donna McPherson (Saur) who happened to be attending the World Girl Guide Camp in Algonquin Park, Ont. in the summer of 1957 when she was photographed grabbing a beverage. A bottle of Coca Cola.
You can clearly see in the photo the Coke machine has the slogan "Have a Coke" written on it.
Well, this was 22 years before Coke launched its legendary "Have a Coke And a Smile" campaign with one of the greatest commercials of all-time:
Clearly, Donna is smiling in the photo taken two decades before the campaign started.
No matter, today, Thursday, July 24, is the fourth Thursday of the month, which means it's National Refreshment Day. And with temperatures in the North Okanagan forecasting 30-plus-degree temperatures, an icy cold beverage of any kind will be perfect for a hot summer day.
National Day Calendar says Refreshment Day was founded in May 2015 by the Traveler Beer Company, a craft beer outfit in Burlington, Vermont, which was looking to highlight the refreshing flavours of summer.
Cheers!
