Revelstoke's Big Eddy Pub toasts to 50 years

Community invited to free event Aug. 9 with live music, food specials, custom T-shirts, face painting, outdoor games, giveaways

The oldest pub on the west side of Revelstoke is toasting to a half-century milestone on Aug. 9,  and the entire community is invited.

Big Eddy Pub (BEP) will celebrate 50 years of business on the west side of the Columbia River, all day Saturday, combining its "Wing Wednesday" and "Burger Thursday" for a one-day special.

BEP, as it's affectionately called, has remained locally owned and operated since 1975 Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥” the same year that ski jumping ended for the city.

Naturally, the pub's name came from "the swirling eddy in the Columbia River" and "not a giant man by the name of Edward," its website jokes.

Owner John Ferguson took the reins of the business in 2010, after working in the bar industry out east in Windsor, Ont., and helping friend Joel Asher build The Village Idiot Bar & Grill.

All members of the public may join BEP's Saturday fun at no cost, with live music hitting the stereo at 3 p.m. with Revelstoke rock artist Al Lee and local five-piece band Shoestring Necktie.

Along with libations, burger specials and half-price wings on the menu, outdoor games and several hours of face painting will make it an event for all ages.

Giveaways will run throughout the celebration, including 100 50th-anniversary T-shirts that will go out to the first folks who show up. Fifty $50 gift cards will additionally be distributed randomly.

While dogs aren't allowed on the two patios, according to the pub's website, "we do have shaded areas on the other side of our patio fence, with bowls of water ready to keep your pooch hydrated and comfortable."

"Thank you for being part of our journey," BEP shared on Facebook. "We canÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™t wait to celebrate with you!"

The celebration runs from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday at 2108 Big Eddy Road.
