Penticton grocery store gets in on cheesy world record attempt

Locations across Canada team up to attempt to break unique world record

It was all about the cheese for five minutes in Penticton.

Penticton's Real Canadian Superstore was one of 450 grocery locations across Canada to attempt to break the Guinness World Record of cracking open more than 1,800 cheese wheels at once.

Loblaw Companies Ltd. and Parmigiano Reggiano teamed up to take on the challenge, which started nationwide simultaneously at 9 a.m.

In Penticton, it took store employees just over five minutes to crack five cheese wheels.

Several local Superstore shoppers stopped what they were doing to watch the event unfold. Samples of the cheese were made available afterward.

More than 40 Loblaw-affiliated stores in B.C. also took part in the challenge, including locations in Kelowna, Vernon, and Kamloops.

Loblaws and Parmigiano Reggiano were attempting to break their own record set in 2014, when more than 1,000 wheels were cracked open at once.

Although it has yet to be made official, the old record was expected to be broken following Saturday's event.
