Summerland graduates of 1965 gather for 60-year reunion

Alumni have witnessed many changes since their high school days

The weekend of July 5 and 6 will be a time of celebration for Summerland香蕉视频直播檚 graduating class of 1965.

Graduates from the 68-member class will gather in Summerland for their 60-year reunion.

The events planned for the weekend include a tour of the high school, a ride on the Kettle Valley Steam Railway and time at the beach to reminisce about high school days, said Gordon Dunsdon, one of the reunion organizers.

The high school, now Summerland Secondary School, was built in 1951, but over the years it has had numerous upgrades and expansions.

The most recent addition was a new gym, which opened in November 2024, at a cost of $10.5 million.

Dunsdon said the world has also undergone many transformations since the students graduated 60 years ago. At that time, the first moon landing was still four years into the future, and technological developments including the internet were not yet on the horizon.

Michael Inch, who now lives in Richmond, worked as an electrical engineer and designed the lighting system used in some of the tunnels along the Trans-Canada Highway around Rogers Pass.

John Bennest, who now lives in Summerland, was involved in some of the work with the television series, The Beachcombers.

George McMechan, a technical geophysicist, is the author of more than 200 publications on a range of topics.

Dunsdon said the reunion will be an important opportunity for the alumni to meet and reconnect.
