CMHA's Vicki Proulx accepts a donation from Okanagan Restoration Services' Sarah Moorehouse to kick off the month-long food drive.

When it comes to food insecurity, there's more than just a rumbling tummy.

Not being able to afford or access such a basic need weighs heavily on mental health.

To ensure those who are struggling don't have to take on this extra burden, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Vernon & District is holding a Food Drive over the next month.

Donations will help stock the food pantry at the Youth Integrated Services Hub as well as to stock the cupboards for Adult Services.

Donations can be dropped off until the end of September at the CMHA office at 3100 28th Ave., Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

CMHA is especially in need of:

  • Canned proteins (tuna, chicken, beans)
  • Ready-to-eat meals (chili, stew, Chef Boyardee, pasta cups)
  • Instant noodles & oatmeal cups
  • Granola bars, crackers and applesauce
  • Shelf-stable milk, juice boxes
  • Personal care items (toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, feminine hygiene products)
  • Diverse and culturally familiar products or meals are strongly encouraged

Easy-open, no-cook items (non-perishables only) are especially appreciated for those without access to a stove.

"A full stomach can mean a calmer mind," CMHA said. "Every donation helps ease the stress of food insecurity and reminds someone they're not alone. Together, we can nourish both body and mind Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥” one meal at a time."

Finanical donation can also be made to the Food Security Program at
