Jazz trio to perform in Summerland

Sons of Django will hold outdoor concert on July 24

Sons of Django, a Saskatoon-based jazz trio, will perform at an outdoor concert in Summerland in July.

The trio pays homage to the music of Jango Django Reinhardt and the style of jazz manouche, with a mix of traditional and contemporary manouche standards.

The band consists of Stephen Davis on lead guitar, Lorne Deighton on rhythm guitar and Emmett Fortosky on bass. They have been playing together for more than a decade.

Band members say they love the style of music because it appeals to a wide variety of people.

Django Reinhardt was a Belgian-born Romani jazz guitarist and composer in France. He has been described as one of the best improvisors of all time. The Sons of Django follow in his tradition, using his recordings to shape their own style.

The concert will be held Thursday, July 24 at 7 p.m. at the creekside behind St. Stephen Anglican Church in Summerland, 9311 Prairie Valley Rd.

Admission is by donation. Those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and possibly a sweater or a hat.
