Prickly plane passenger safe in Summerland after cross-province journey

The young porcupine is now fattening up at the Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society after being discovered in Kelowna

After three days of turbulent travel, a young porcupine stowaway was discovered inside a plane in Kelowna 香蕉视频直播 thousands of kilometres from where she first boarded.

香蕉视频直播淭his was definitely an inquiry we have never received before," said Eva Hartmann, the founder of Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Summerland about being called to assist with an unusual and prickly task on May 30.

Earlier in the week, a team of plane salvage crews had been tasked with transporting a plane wreck from Northern B.C. to Kelowna. Unbeknownst to the crew, an adventurous young female porcupine had curled up below the pilot's seat.

For three days, the porcupine stayed hidden while the plane wreck was transported by helicopter, boat and trailer until it arrived in Kelowna.

The young animal started curiously poking its head out from under the pilot chair when workers of the wreck recovery company were preparing to unload the plane from their trailer. The workers worried that the young and small porcupine could get lost in the many machines of the the industrial yard, where there is no food.

The team tried their best to coax and lure the porcupine out, but their efforts were to no avail.

That is when Hartmann was called in.

Typically, Interior Wildlife does not capture wild animals themselves.on how and when to safely capture and transport an animal to a partner vet clinic or the centre in Summerland.

However, this young porcupine 香蕉视频直播 scared and trapped in an airplane thousands away from its home 香蕉视频直播 needed specialized help.

Hartmann and her team lightly sedated the porcupine with an intramuscular injection into the rear end. Once the young rodent was was sufficiently sleepy, she was gently pulled out from under the pilot's chair by her front arms.

"No quills were shed," said Hartmann. "Safe for the humans involved and the animal itself.香蕉视频直播

Aside from their prickly exterior, porcupines live a peaceful, solitary life, said Hartmann.

The large rodents feed only on vegetation, like the inner bark of trees, shoots, leaves, buds and occasionally fruit when available and spend the majority of their lives in trees.

This porcupine is now in the care of Interior Wildlife.

"She will need to fatten up a bit over the next weeks, being quite skinny," said Hartmann.

The Rehabilitation Society is also awaiting a response from the local government authorities on where the porcupine can be released.

香蕉视频直播淯sually we release our wildlife patients within 10kms of site of origin, that would be tricky in this special case," said Hartmann.

While yellow-bellied marmots known for hitching rides under the hood of vehicles, a porcupine in a plane was a story not ever before seen by the Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society.
