B.C.'s chief coroner will not be holding an inquest into the death of Lisa Rauch, a woman who died after being shot in the head with a less-lethal ARWEN round by a Victoria police officer on Christmas Day in 2019.
On Thursday, June 12, a public hearing held by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner (OPCC) Ron Kirkwood, with a seven-day unpaid suspension after the adjudicator found he was not justified in his use of force.
Dr. Jatinder Baidwan, the newly appointed chief coroner, announced on June 19 that they will not be moving forward with a coroner's inquest, which was requested by Rauch's family, as he says it is not necessary under the Coroners Act.
According to the Coroners Act, an inquest is not necessary in this case as there was no connection between Rauch's death and the nature of the care she received while detained or in custody, and because the OPCC inquest had already laid out recommendations and made details of the case public.
"In making the decision not to direct an inquest, the chief coroner has also carefully considered the wishes of Lisa Rauch香蕉视频直播檚 family," noted a release from the coroner's office.
Kirkwood has not been charged with any crime. A police discipline authority found no appearance of misconduct in 2022, and the former police complaint commissioner sent that decision for review by a retired judge, who dismissed two misconduct allegations in July 2023.
