An attempt to flee Vernon North Okanagan RCMP left a suspect up a creek.
The local constabulary's Indigenous Policing Service Officer was investigating a report of a suspicious person on Westside Road Tuesday, May 6, at around 11:30 a.m., when the officer came across what appeared to be a temporary camp in a wooded area near Bonneau Road.
While inspecting the camp, the officer noticed two firearms in plain view. After the officer secured the firearms, and assessed the area, the suspect returned to the camp. He immediately took off after seeing the officer.
"After a brief foot chase, the suspect jumped into a nearby creek and perched himself on a log in the middle of the fast-moving water to avoid capture," said Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media relations officer Const. Chris Terleski.
Given the heightened risk, a critical incident response was initiated and members of the RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, and a crisis negotiator were deployed to assist in safely resolving the situation.
With the man refusing to come to shore, police contained the area and eventually negotiated a peaceful surrender.
The 35-year-old man remains in custody and is expected to appear in court Wednesday, May 7.
