Just ahead of the Penticton Peach Festival's opening day, the RCMP have issued a warning that a national parking scam has been reported in the area.
The scam involves fake QR codes placed on or near parking meters, signage, or pay stations, that take people to fraudelent but real-looking sites designed mimic legitimate payment systems in order steal people's financial information.
The City's parking payment system, the Passport Canada Parking app, does not use QR codes.
"If you encounter a QR code claiming to link to a parking payment page, do not scan it and report it immediately," the RCMP said.
People who have scanned a suspicious QR code and entered payment details, are advised to contact their financial institution immediately and report the incident to the RCMP.
Anyone who encounters suspicious parking signage or QR codes in Penticton is asked to contact the Penticton RCMP non-emergency line at 250-492-4300.
