While British ColumbiaÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s wildfires have destroyed more than 700,000 hectares this year, there have been few evacuation orders and alerts so far.

However, in late July, a fire in the Okanagan Valley and a fire near Lytton both came close to populated areas.

Several evacuation alerts have been issued for those living near the Cantilever Bar Wildfire near Lytton, and evacuation orders and alerts were issued for some residents near the Drought Hill Wildfire in the Central Okanagan.

This is not the first time these areas have been affected by wildfires.

In late June 2021, a wildfire destroyed much of the Village of Lytton. The community has been rebuilding, but much work still remains. The damage from the fires can still be seen, and the community has changed as a result.

Residents of the Central Okanagan have lived through past wildfires in their areas. Fires in 2003, 2009 and 2017 affected communities in this area, and other recent wildfire seasons have had evacuation orders and alerts in many parts of the Okanagan Valley.

Many residents take wildfire precautions by packing a grab-and-go bag with items they will need in case of a sudden evacuation.

While the preparations are good, it is also important to remember that evacuations can quickly become complicated during a fire season.

The Drought Hill Wildfire resulted in temporary closures of Highway 97 and Highway 97C, followed by single-lane alternating traffic. These are two principal highways, with Highway 97 forming the transportation corridor in the Okanagan, and Highway 97C providing an important connection from the Central Okanagan to the Coast.

The recent evacuation orders and alerts have shown that the fires are not just happening in remote or isolated areas. They are affecting people and communities.
