Vernon's Shanda Hill continues to gut out one of her toughest races yet.
As of Monday, June 30, the ultra athlete has 90 kilometres to go in the Bretzel Ultra Deca Triathlon race in Colmar, France, and is currently second on the leaderboard.
"Her ankle is still stitched up and throbbing, the heat is stuck in the mid-30s under a severe warning, and she has been moving for more than 203 hours," said an update from her Facebook page. "That is it. Just 90 km stand between her and the finish line of one of the hardest races on earth."
Hill has already swum 38 km, cycled 1,800 km and run all but 90 of the 422 km run. After being in first place in the 10x Iron distance Deca race, competitor Goulween Tristant has leaped ahead, and is 12 km up on Hill. Alina Ranceva is nipping at Hill's heels, just 30 km's back, which is setting up a close race to the finish line.
"Shanda told us from the start she was going on the hunt and would not stop until she took this race," said an update. "Now it all comes down to who can hold on the longest. This is where years of experience and mental grit will take over."
