Yeti Rugby Club's women's team dominates championship event in Salmon Arm

'The womenÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s team had a trust and chemistry on the field which translated into winning our first Saratoga Cup on home soil!'

The Yeti Rugby Club's women's team dominated the competition over the weekend during the 2025 Saratoga Cup championships in Salmon Arm.

Hosted by the Yeti, the Okanagan Rugby Union event, which included the first-ever Women's Sarataga Cup championships, saw 10 teams from seven clubs representing the Okanagan, Kootenay and Interior regions battle it out at Little Mountain Sports Complex on Aug. 9 and 10.

First game of Aug. 9 was the men's semi-finals that pitted the Vernon Jackals against Cranbrook/Kimberly's Rocky Mountain Rogues. The game ended in a 27-0 victory for the Jackals. Later that day, in a second men's semi-finals game, the Terrace Northmen seized a 12-5 win over Yeti.

Next stop for the Vernon team was Sunday's finals versus defending champion the Northmen, the 2024 Saratoga Cup champs. The close game was resolved in extra time with the Vernon team coming out on top, 20-19. The Yeti men went up against the Rogues to claim third place. The game ended 34-17 for the Rogues.

Women's competition began Saturday morning with a series of 7s round robin games. The Yeti's first was an afternoon affair that saw them overrun the Penticton Harlequins with a 50-0 tally. This trend continued throughout the Yet's round robin games, with a 34-12 win against the Terrace Northmen, and two wins Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥“ 24-0 and 39-0 Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥“ versus the Rocky Mountain Rogues. The latter two teams advanced to the finals where the Yeti completed their impressive weekend with 28-10 victory.

Captain Michelle Hoekstra called the weekend an amazing accomplishment for the Yeti women's team and women's rugby in genera in Salmon Arm, noting the club's women's program started only last year with herself and coach Jenna Elidoros, who has also been fundamental in growing Salmon Arm Secondary's Jewels rugby teams.

"Girls high school rugby has been growing in the Okanagan and we have had many graduated players join us both summers now," said Hoekstra. "Giving players a place to continue to play when they are done their high school programs, or to provide a positive and open community for those returning to the sport Ï㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥“ the Yeti has done this exceptionally well.

"The womenÏ㽶ÊÓƵֱ²¥™s team had a trust and chemistry on the field which translated into winning our first Saratoga Cup on home soil!"
