A western painted turtle has been returned home to Still Pond in Kelowna's Wilden community.

The small creature had been in the care of the Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society for six weeks after being struck by a car and suffering from a cracked shell.

The society's founder Eva Hartmann said they regularly help to repair turtle shells.

"You can accomplish a lot with a little bit of glue and bridges to make sure that the shell parts are aligned properly," Hartmann explained, adding the most difficult cracks to repair are on the sides where the top and bottom of the shell meet.

Hartmann was joined by society volunteers and Wilden's marketing manager Johanna Eger for the release the morning of July 3, which included installing a new sign telling drivers to slow down and watch for wildlife.

"It's important that we do take all the measures that we can from a development end to make sure we accommodate our wild residents," said Eger.

A small animal underpass was installed near the Union Road roundabout in Wilden to allow safe passage between wetlands on either side.
