Democracy in Summerland came at a price

Council members received $187,259.83 in pay and expenses in 2024

SummerlandÏã½¶ÊÓÆµÖ±²¥™s mayor and six councillors received close to $190,000 in remuneration and expenses in 2024, according to figures in the Statement of Financial Information.

The cost of democracy in Summerland was close to $190,000 in 2024.

The seven members of municipal council received a total of $154,022.85 in 2024 and claimed a total of $33,236.98 in expenses.

These amounts were released in the municipalityÏã½¶ÊÓÆµÖ±²¥™s Statement of Financial Information.

Summerland mayor Doug Holmes received pay of $39,673.88 and claimed $9,632.40 in expenses.

Deputy mayor Erin Trainer received $25,053.13 in pay and had expenses of $6,235.40.

Coun. Adrienne Betts received $17,883 in pay and had expenses of $5,391.79.

The remaining councillors Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµÖ±²¥” Richard Barkwill, Doug Patan, Janet Peake, and Martin Van Alphen Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµÖ±²¥” each received pay of $17,853.21.

The difference in pay for Betts comes because she was the only councillor to opt into a municipal benefits package.

Barkwill claimed expenses of $6,524.14 and Peake recorded expenses of $5,453.17. Patan and Van Alphen did not claim expenses.

The Statement of Financial Information is required from each local government. It is due by June 30.
