Imagine playing a sport without sight, or sound, or with only one arm; that is what the Playing in My Shoes disc golf event aims help people experience as it continues to extend its reach across Canada. 

Playing in My Shoes started with one course only at Pine Park in Keremeos in 2023, as a course that was designed and built to be fully wheelchair accessible. 

"The event is designed to provide attendees with a sense of understanding of what it means to play in someone else香蕉视频直播檚 shoes," organizer and Keremeos resident Dion Eden said in an email. "This is the third annual event that celebrates and promotes disc golf diversity, accessibility, and inclusivity for all ages, income levels, and abilities to the sport. "

Eden is the president of the BC Disc Golf Association and the founder of All-Accessible Disc Golf.

Since it started, the disc golf clinic has grown dramatically, with about 30 courses across B.C. participating in the second year and now an estimated 50 to 60 participating on May 25 across Canada. 

The day marks the start of Canadian Accessibility Week, and the special clinic will run for about three hours at each of the participating courses from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the local time zones. 

To give people a chance to experience how players of differing levels of ability approach the game, participants will try out five different throws that recognize these differing perspectives. 

They consist of throwing from a wheelchair or chair, with earplugs, with their non-dominant arm, with a taped hand, and with a blindfold where they throw to a sound device located at the disc golf goal.

The goal of the event is to encourage empathy and to promote inclusive planning for disc golf courses and the importance of accessibility both in sport and in general.

Eden partnered with the organization Udisc in 2024 to launch an accessibility ratings program for disc golf courses across the world, breaking them down from wheelchair-accessible, limited mobility, cane-accessible and low accessibility.
