UPDATE: Okanagan upgraded to severe thunderstorm warning with nickel-sized hail

The majority of the Okanagan has been upgraded a severe thunderstorm warning on Thursday, June 12.

In the Okanagan, Environment Canada has upgraded the severe thunderstorm watch to a warning.

"Meteorologists are tracking a cluster of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain," stated Environment Canada.

The area under the warning expands west to east from Peachland to Naskup, and Penticton to Enderby. 

Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Revelstoke, and the Kootenays all remain under a severe thunderstorm watch.

A thunderstorm could be on the way for the Okanagan and Kootenays.

On Thursday morning (June 12), Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the regions, stating weather conditions are favourable to development severe thunderstorms that could produce strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

"When thunder roars, go indoors," stated the government weather agency. "Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year."

The chance of rain across the regions range from 30 to 70 per cent with wind from 20 km/h to 90 km/h, with the stronger gusts in the Kootenay region.
